Preparing Compassionate and Skilled Clinicians and Nurse Leaders

At Samuel Merritt University’s College of Nursing, we prepare future nurses to deliver compassionate, evidence-based, and culturally responsive care in today’s rapidly evolving healthcare environment. Our programs combine rigorous academic instruction with hands-on clinical training, ensuring every student develops the clinical confidence, critical-thinking ability, and leadership skills needed to succeed across diverse care settings.

Students learn from experienced nurse educators and clinicians who bring real-world insights from hospitals, community clinics, public health organizations, and advanced practice roles. Through immersive simulation, interprofessional collaboration, and mentorship from practicing nurses, learners gain practical skills that strengthen patient outcomes and elevate their professional readiness.

Whether students are beginning their nursing journey or advancing into specialized or leadership roles, SMU equips them to:

            • Deliver safe, patient-centered care with compassion and integrity
            • Lead care teams with strong communication, empathy, and clinical judgment
            • Apply evidence-based practices to improve patient outcomes
            • Address health equity challenges through culturally competent care
            • Adapt to emerging healthcare technologies and changing patient needs

In line with SMU’s mission, our programs prepare nurses to promote health and well-being across diverse populations and communities, recognize the importance of social determinants of health, and practice with compassion, kindness, and respect. Our curriculum blends theory, research, and practice and prepares you to make evidence-based decisions and work independently or in tandem with other caregivers.
